Guardamar del Segura

A seaside town where the Segura river meets the Mediterranean, with long sandy beaches backed by dunes and a pine forest.

Beaches, dunes and pine forest

Guardamar del Segura lies at the mouth of the Segura river, on the southern Costa Blanca between Alicante and Torrevieja. Its coastline has around 11 km of fine sandy beaches, from the beaches by the town centre south to El Moncayo, almost all of them backed by dunes.

Behind the dunes is a large pine forest, planted from the early 20th century to stop the sand from burying the town. Today it is a park crossed by walking and cycling paths, and its edge by the town is the Reina Sofía park. The Marina de las Dunas sits at the mouth of the river.

Everyday life

Guardamar is a real town all year round, not only a summer resort: it has shops, a weekly market, restaurants, schools and health services. The old town on the castle hill was destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, and Guardamar was rebuilt below it on a regular grid of streets. El Raso is a residential area a few kilometres inland.

Torrevieja is about 15 km to the south and the city of Alicante about 35 km to the north. Alicante-Elche airport is about 30 km away by motorway.

Golf

La Marquesa Golf in Ciudad Quesada is a short drive inland, and the courses of Orihuela Costa, such as Villamartín, Las Ramblas and Campoamor, are about half an hour south. See our golf guide.
